Really want to read the paper on how HSR only reduces GHG by 1%. That's a shocking number to me given the ridership of the busy lines. Rail is already extremely far more efficient compared to cars, so for the reduction to be so low given the paper cites reduction in passenger vehicles... Maybe it's because HSR in china displaces slow rail vs displacing road vehicles?
EVs if charged with coal power plants are STILL more efficient than ICE vehicle across their lifetimes. I distinctly remember Elon pushing this line back with the first Tesla roadster in 2008, being shocked and doing the math myself and reaching the same conclusion.
